There are many unforeseen circumstances or unpleasant incidents that can prevent a vessel from sailing, from a leaking stern tube to a malfunctioning rudder. For such cases, drydocking is not an option, and arranging the vessel to be unloaded at sea is a tedious and expensive decision for the owner, not forgetting the vessel is still unable to leave its location.
Highly technical repairs or replacements of a ship’s external underwater equipment and machinery can be done without dry-docking via mobdocks (mobile mini drydock), where repair work is done below the water line by taking a small mobile drydock environment to the vessel. With the implementation of this technique divers/technicians can perform permanent repairs to all parts of the underwater ship propulsion system, as well as steel work or crack repairs in drydock-like conditions.
This permits normal commercial activities to continue without disruption, eliminating the loss of time, production and income that drydocking entails, as well as saving the enormous expense of drydocking itself.
